Nightcap 33 The Famous Grouse 12yo

This is a bright deep golden colour in the glass. The nose was a little restricted due to my long lasting head cold, but I detected honeycomb and malt with good oak. The first sip is smooth and mouth filling, but it warms the oesophagus nicely. Honey and spice are evident on the palate and it leaves pleasant flavours in the mouth. A little bit of peat maybe? The finish has vanilla and also liquorice. This is a very handy drop given the fact that it is a blend of malts. It lives on the second shelf but could easily replace a poor performer on the top shelf. I visited Glenturret, the home of Famous Grouse and even made an etching entitled “Self Portrait with Big Breasted Bird”.

The Famous Grouse is a well known blended scotch that contains a goodly portion of single malts from across Scotland. A visitor centre has been set up at the Glenturret distillery near the small village of Crieff in the highlands of Scotland that focuses on the various versions of the Famous Grouse, but also has some Glenturret for sale.

The very friendly lady behind the bar was happy to supply small portions of some whiskies and I was able to sample:

  • Famous Grouse 12 year old
  • Famous Grouse 15 year old
  • Famous Grouse 18 year old
  • Famous Grouse 21 year old
  • Glenturret 10 year old
  • Highland Park 18 year old

At the end of all that it was a bit hard to differentiate, but the Highland park was a sensational drop with very little burn and smooth & elegant.

I also enjoyed the Glenturret.
