Nightcap 29 The Glenlivet 12yo

A bright golden straw colour. there are citrus overtones on the nose, particularly apples. A clean aroma with a wisp of smoke. Very smooth drop with the usual warming of the oesophagus. The apple taste is also in the mouth as well as lots of leather. Fruity and crispy all the way. It actually started the saliva going. This is a very elegant scotch. nothing is huge and in your face, but delicate and beautifully in balance. I bought this on special for $45! I am stunned with the quality. Where AM I going to hide that expensive Oban?

Nightcap 28 Dewar’s Special Reserve 12yo

I am now deep into my second shelf with some blended scotch bottles. This one is a deep amber colour with slight mahogany tinges. There are lots scrabbling for attention on the nose: honey, malt, smoke and even fruit (dried). It has a big flavour in the mouth and that usual 40% warming feeling of the oesophagus, but not in any way could you call it a burn. Saliva developing spices and oakiness. The flavour is perhaps a little overpowering and things slightly out of balance. It is not the best selection I have made, but it is far from a raw spirit. A little water knocks off the rough edges. Good finish. Will make very handy Rusty Nails.

Nightcap 27 Laphroaig 10yo

It is a deep amber golden colour. Even as it is poured from the bottle, the Islay aroma is evident; a big peat reek, but soft oak and that band-aid medicinal aroma as well as the sea that washes up against the distillery. Smooth and sweet in the mouth until the peat hits the gullet and that rush of iodine and salty notes takes place, but very pleasantly. This is a fabulous scotch. Twelve years ago I knew very little about scotch until I tasted this stuff. It was one of those “That’s what the fuss is all about!” moments. The finish is long and pleasant and sweet. Still one of my favourite scotches and the fact that I have been there, on the tour, claimed my square foot of peat is fabulous. i hope I get the chance to go again.

Nightcap 26 Johnnie Walker Black Label 12yo

It is a deep golden colour with tinges of mahogany. It has a really powerful complex nose. The malt is there of course, but it shows fruits such as grapes, apples and other citrus varieties. Super smooth on the way down and then the alcohol does its stuff and warms the oesophagus. A burst of peat, but mouth-filling and pleasant. Definitely a hint of sherry barrels. There is a long strong finish. It is a better blend, more balanced than the green label of yesterday. This blend blows the Oban away and at less than half the price. What am I going to do with all that expensive Oban. Try a rusty nail?

This is a bright gold in colour. It has a complex nose that has hints of peat, smoke, some sandalwood, ripe fruit and the sea. It is very smooth going down but leaves a lingering warmth in the mouth. It is very woody and drying, but finishes long and pleasantly. This is a blended malt whisky using “Talisker (The Power), Linkwood (The Finesse), Craggenmore (The Heart), and Caol Ila (The Mystery).” While not as pleasant as some, it is certainly a powerful drop and will make great rusty nails. Probably would go better with a little water, or ice. Definitely a second shelf job.

Nightcap 24 Bowmore Legend (No Age Statement)

Another of Islay’s treasures is the Bowmore Distillery with a great tasting room overlooking the loch across to Port Charlotte. The Bowmore Legend is a deep golden colour in the glass. It has a delicate nose with the peat showing through. There is an attractive earthy character, as well as almonds. I could also smell the sherry from the casks. Quite smooth, but does warm the gullet on the way down. It explodes in a melee of complex flavours. There is the sweet malt, but with a peat shadow. It is very dry and smoky. It has a long pleasant finish that leaves a tingle on the tongue. A high class single malt whisky.

Nightcap 23 Inverhouse 12yo

This was a golden straw colour. It has a fairly subdued nose with sherry hints. It is very smooth going down, but has an acidic kick coming back. It finishes fairly pleasant. Not one of the better ones and is correctly placed on the bottom shelf; however it is not unpleasant like the Oban. This will make good rusty nails.
